But have you tried turning off your screen?
I understand the hypocrisy of the above line and the fact that you are reading this on a screen, but stick with me. This past weekend I was reminded of how imperative this choice is for me, my mental health and my “just for the heck of it” joy level.
As makers in a modern world our sales generally depend on marketing via some sort of screen. Whether that be social, emails, YouTube, etc. it is an essential part of our business. However, on the flip side I know my best creative ideas or solutions have never come while a screen was in my face.
We like to say, “Oh, I’m just gleaning inspiration,“ which is all fair and good however there comes a point when we must head into our own creative spaces, screw up, solve the problem, and actually make the thing. And I know this is a tough one (a reminder I need daily) but just because you don’t have a picture of you doing something doesn’t mean it wasn’t important or valuable, it just means that you are DOING!
So here’s exactly what my weekend looked like without a screen in my face. I hope this gives you encouragement that no matter the size of the task or seemingly mundane nature, if it brings you joy or just gets crossed off your to-do list, amen!
I actually started a new book, yes a tangible paper book. I then jumped on the back of the flatbed and helped my husband feed horses and colts. Next, to my shed and gabbed my orbital sander and refinished a side table that has been a sad grey for too long. Added some copper studs to the bottom as my little helper watched on and did her best to test the strength of each nail by trying to pull them out. Load after load of laundry was happening during all of this :)
Next came hanging a shelf over our water heater (took two tries because apparently that side of the house is extremely unlevel). Now my husband has the entire closet to store all his little self defense toys and their accessories and the paint of mine is re-homed. Had a fantastic nap as my little munchkin had hers. Lastly, I trimmed the curtains in our room so our robot vacuum stops getting stuck on them (it’s been years geez)! All throughout the day I felt I had plenty of time and took breaks to play with Clara and just enjoy the weather. I went to bed feeling accomplished and at peace.
I would love to hear about your non-screen habits and things you love to get done in that time. I truly hope this encourages you to step away whenever you need and leave the digital tools imperative to our business as just that, TOOLS.
Until next time, keep being Makers of Good.
With love,
Nevada.
